Staying Sober For The Holidays

The holiday season is upon us once again. The parties are being planned and the food prepared. You too must prepare yourself for the struggles, temptations or flashbacks that could be winging their way in your direction even as you read this. Of course, the holidays are a time of celebration but for many of us, in the past, celebrating meant getting high or drunk.
This could be your first holiday sober and the memories could come flooding back. It would be foolish to face this season unprepared. So in light of this, here are some tips to help get you through the holidays sane and sober.

Evangelists and Chemical Recovery - One in Spirit and PurposeWritten By Jim Brown

After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:28-29
It is not that the disciples in the above scripture couldn’t drive out the demon from the cruelly possessed boy; they needed help getting it done. They had cast out demons before but these ones were more entrenched and harder to defeat. Jesus explained that in order to cast out certain demons, the disciples would need some additional tools in their spiritual toolbox. Their faith had not been sufficient to get the job done without some added prayer and fasting. This is still true for us today; we face many challenges as Christians that are difficult to get through without a little extra help.

Developing a Biblical Conviction About Addiction

The purpose of this study is to help someone develop biblical convictions about addressing the use and abuse of alcohol, nicotine and other damaging chemical addictive substances.
Biblical Definition of Addiction: Romans 7:14-20
This scripture clearly shows the powerlessness associated with addiction. Give an example of someone who wants to quit drinking (smoking or drugging) and has tried many times only to find themselves back at square one. It also shows its relationship to sin. From the very beginning it is important to establish that addiction is a sin issue and must be approached from that standpoint. Helping the person you are studying with to understand this at the outset will be crucial to their willingness to repent and get help.

A Study on Smoking

Smoking is pretty harmless isn't it? I mean... if God didn't want us smoking, he would have made it illegal. It's tobacco, it grows from the ground, it's natural, it can't be that bad for you. It one of the few pleasures I have left and now you're trying to take it away from me. How many times have we heard these "reasons" or even used some of them ourselves.

As someone once told me, "Facts are our friends", and as disciples, we need to cut through the smoke and mirrors so that we can be prepared to answer those who are caught in the addiction of tobacco. Lets take a look at some of the facts.

The Attitude Of Gratitude

One of the leading causes of relapse is resentment. When we fail to resolve conflict with others but, instead, let the feelings build to the point of blindness, we become bitter and resentful toward God and those around us. If we remain unchanged, we can eventually walk away from God. It is not only the young immature Christian who struggles with resentment, but also those with many years as disciples. The devil is no respecter of persons. He is looking to pull everyone away from the Lord. When we become resentful, we lose our gratitude for God and for those He has put in our lives. In this short study, we will look at why, as addicts, we need always to be grateful and examine some practicals to help us stay that way.

CR Classes

Part of helping the individual to recover from drug abuse is education. Education is crucial as it gives the addict tools he or she can use in the moment. It teaches them about triggers; how to recognize them and what to do when they happen. It prepares them for being around family at holidays. Currently there are three classes that are part of the curriculum taught within a Chemical Recovery group. These classes should be taught to the addict prior to graduation. These are not the only classes that may be taught but these are essential. The classes are as follows: Defining chemical dependency, reaching out to the addict and discipling the recovering Christian. Read through the classes and familiarize yourself with them so that you will be prepared.

Defining Chemical Dependancy
Reaching Out To The Chemically Addicted
Shepherding The Recovering Christian

The Good News About Smoking

Good News...Smoking. Isn't this an oxymoron? Good news is usually not associated with smoking. Heart disease, emphysema, bad breath and clothes that smell like an ashtray, these are the usual associations. How can there any good news about this habit? Well there is... presuming, of course, that you quit!

The American Cancer Society informs us that as soon as you take your last puff your body begins to go through a series of physiological changes.

Creating a CR Graduation Certificate

When a person graduates from a Chemical Recovery group, it is a great occasion. Their graduation shows the power of God working in their lives and that they have put their whole heart into working the program.

As such, a CR graduation is a celebration and when the graduate receives their certificate, for some, it will be the first thing they have ever completed let alone graduated from. For that reason, it is important that we give the graduates something to reflect their accomplishment.

The example below is simply that - an example. There is no standard template for the CR ministries. Use what looks best to you. The important thing is that the achievement is recognized.

The Nature of a Servant

When we look at Gods Word, we find that there are many words or ideas used repeatedly. Repetition is a handy tool. It is used in schools to teach children to read and write, it is also used by advertisers to intice us to buy their product intead of the competitors. Repetition imprints ideas or lessons in our minds so that we will remember them later. God uses repetition to teach us laws and concepts that are close to His heart. As Jer 29:11 says,

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD , "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
