Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Sherlock HolmesUsing any credible measures for assessing the quality of a movie, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows scores an A plus across the board. Action-packed, full of the type of wit the English are famous for, compelling cinematography that puts you convincingly in the London of the late 1800's, and a cast of actors that never remind you they are acting. But for a guy like me it is the seemingly unintended message that moves me most deeply.

The power of logic is too seldomly lifted up as the virtue that it is. People of faith often believe the lie that logic (and by extension truth) is incompatible with faith. That God is orderly and has ordered the world as a means to show himself wise and magnificent is not spoken of so much.

Study: Nicotine Replacement Therapies Don't Work

There are a number of commercial products designed to help smokers kick the habit, including nicotine patches and nicotine gum. Collectively, they are known as nicotine replacement therapies (NRT).Do they work? Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the University of Massachusetts Boston suggest that they do not. They claims, they say, just don't add up."What this study shows is the need for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which oversees regulation of both medications to help smokers quit and tobacco products, to approve only medications that have been proven to be effective in helping smokers quit in the long-term and to lower nicotine in order to reduce the addictiveness of cigarettes," said co-author Gregory Connolly, director of the Center for Global Tobacco Control at HSPH.

My Heart Wasn’t Ready To Change

I first came to the Chemical Recovery Ministry two years ago when I was trying to get my life together and quit using drugs and alcohol. At that time my heart wasn’t ready to change and I continued using.

Last year in 2010 I started studying the bible and found that with my addiction I needed to be around people who were mature in recovery and could relate to me. The ministry met my spiritual needs as a young Christian.

Spiritually Spring Cleaned - Total Recovery

1_1302547363_Spirit.jpgMy wife and I took this past weekend to do some Spring cleaning. We spent two evenings cleaning the house from top to bottom. By the second evening I did not see sleep until 3:30am falling into bed exhausted.

Spring cleaning is an exhausting task on two levels. First there is the actual cleaning work itself but then there is the multitude of decisions that have to be made around what you are going to keep and what you are going to throw away.

Recovery is Simple

One of the last words that Dr Bob Smith said to Bill Wilson (The co-founders of AA) was for him to Keep it Simple. These words are very important for the addict in recovery and it is in this light that the Chemical Recovery Fellowship has Total Recovery as one of its traditions.

Recovery is difficult but it is not complex. It is not easy but it is simple. When first we enter recovery and start to get some time in, we can feel great about it and we should. The life we were living and the drink we were drinking no longer has the same hold on us. We feel that we can do some of the things we could not do before. We can finally complete many of the incomplete projects littering our lives.

Hearing The Message - Willingness To Change

Willingness To ChangeWhat is it going to take for you to change? We don’t like change. As humans, we would prefer most things to stay the way they are. We settle down and get in the groove while enjoying the status quo. The corporate world is well aware of this fact and has written countless books and seminars on managing change and what to expect if someone moves your cheese.

God is a changer. He loves to change things. He himself does not change because He is perfect and not in need of improvement, however we are the ones who need constant improving. We are chunks of rock being ground to diamonds. This requires heat, friction and change. We don’t like that.
